I switched from Gnome to xfce with the wm replaced by exwm a few years ago, because Gnome was annoying once too often (that was back when Guix didn’t have KDE yet), and now I’m used to it and no longer would want to miss it. Since you’re already using Emacs, that may be an option. It also helps with performance of some games, because there’s then no conflict between desktop and game who gets how much GPU memory. EXWM (Emacs X-Window Manager) also has its glitches, but it’s in Emacs and the integration makes it more convenient than others; (exwm-systemtray-mode) and `dunst -sort -stack_duplicates` fulfill most of my desktop needs.
