Thanks for the suggestions.

I added a rescue block to the method that sends an email with the stack
trace. In the mean time I realize I have other backgroundish jobs that can
fail silently (logged, but I'm rarely monitoring the logs).

This seems like an obvious omission. I find it strange that a job can fail
and there is no built in mechanism to send an alert. The concept of

   1. modifying the job to interact via api with a remote service
   2. paying a remote service to interact with me to let me know my job is
   not behaving

seems... perhaps I could be convinced but right now I don't see the value.
