Thanks for the suggestions. I added a rescue block to the method that sends an email with the stack trace. In the mean time I realize I have other backgroundish jobs that can fail silently (logged, but I'm rarely monitoring the logs).
This seems like an obvious omission. I find it strange that a job can fail and there is no built in mechanism to send an alert.
