I was thrown off by this as well, so I created a gem that extends 
exception_notification for Rake tasks. I've been using successfully with 
the Heroku scheduler for a 
while: https://github.com/nikhaldi/exception_notification-rake

This will only work for you if you're specifically running Rake tasks with 
the scheduler though.
