It would depend on the application. If I understand you right, the guy
and harness design relies on compression between members to develop
it's strength.  This would be effective if the panels were very rigid
and the tie downs and harness had little to no give.  The insulation
panel design commonly used at Burning Man doesn't have those
properties, so the structure would be vulnerable under wind loading to
failure due to tension and shear.  Tape provides the necessary
strength in both of these cases.

However, for other materials and other situations, especially when the
concern for live loading is low (particularly wind), I think a
compression design without tape would be really neat to see.
