Now that I've put the pics in an album, the options for viewing have changed. If you want to enlarge a photo, select "View Full Resolution" under Image Options. Then the cursor becomes a magnifying glass for zooming in.
The adhesive-backed strip foam insulation isn't cheap, but I agree that it's probably cheaper than tape. And to seal the floor with tape you really need a roll that is 3" wide and a lot of patience. Any contaminants, such as playa dust, will compromise or ruin the tape's ability to stick to the foam or tarp. I used Swiffer Sweeper cloths to wipe down the areas I needed to tape, but still the conditions were less than ideal. All we're trying to do here is form a seal between the wall and tarp floor to keep out dust, which can be accomplished by tape or compressed foam. The advantage I see with the foam is that the seal is already finished when the hexayurt has been assembled, so one less chore to do. If you look at the end walls you'll see that I've added four straps that are bolted through the foam board and held in place with fender washers. This makes it easy to assemble the walls in an open space (like the street) then carry the hexayurt to where you want to place it. The door is reinforced by a sheet metal frame that stiffens the 2x2' wall section that has been cut out and provides a solid backing for the hinges and hasp. The inside edge of the plywood door is lined with adhesive-backed foam tape to create a tight seal against the sheet metal frame when the door is closed. Not shown is the door sill, which was made from a 2' length of 2x2" doug fir sandwiched between two sections of 32" 1/8x1" flat bar. This stiffens the wall at the bottom of the door and can be removed for sweeping out dust and dirt. The sill is removed for transport. The window/vent you see in one of the ceiling panels is paired with another at the opposite end of the yurt and mounted low on the wall. This was done to encourage air to enter by the lower vent and exit through the ceiling panel. The furnace filters let in enough light to see what I'm doing during the day. I hinged the cutout pieces of foam on the inside so I could close the vents if I wanted to sleep during the day. I was also planning to test a passive evaporative cooling system that would consist of a plastic dish mounted above the vent on the lower panel. The dish would hold water that would wick down strips of terry cloth (an old towel) hung in front of the lower vent. As the water evaporates from the incoming air flow it would cool the yurt before exiting through the ceiling panel. This experiment never got completed because I got tired of fiddling with the yurt and wanted to see the flaming hula hoop parade Phil Dirt.
