I don't think ether is an "over the counter" thing in the UK. Would industrial spirit (also known as surgical spirit) do instead? That works to dissolve French polish. I haven't got to that stage yet but, as a novice, will, no doubt, end up with greasy spots (fumbling with cotton) and excess rosin soon.
