This type is rubberized and seems to grip even large instruments securely. The only drawback I find is that there is not much vertical clearance between the end of the instrument and the floor, so the crank must always be turned to the 12 o'clock position or it hits the floor. If an instrument had a particularly long distance between the lower end of the instrument and the crank, it could conceivably hit the floor, so it would be best to find a local guitar shop with one of these and take you instrument in an try it, just to be safe.
