It depends on how fussy they are being with the Homeland Security's Alert
Level or whatever it is.

All you can do is ask the airline, and pray. FWIW, or not, it's probably
entirely possible for you to buy a ticket for your instrument and then have
the TSA deny it entry to the gate. It depends on what mood they are in.

We avoided this problem last November by using a flight case. (That didn't
stop some nice person at TSA from helping themselves to what I assume was a
very nice smoked salmon, but that's not the question here.)
