Hello Roddy
A belated welcome to you, emails get neglected in August due to festivals,
gigs etc.
For the cello / viola type sound you need wound strings [correlli crystal are
good]. On my Siorat I use a low G octave, I am sure Helmut would reccomend the
strings best for his instruments. For a real low sound a longer scale or an
alto gurdy may be in order [eg Gotschy's Bosch alto, Mousnier, Wacsaelbaumler].
I like the sound of your musical world, checkout mine at www.drohne.co.uk and
www.myspace.com/philipgmartin , also if you go to my site and press on the link
you will find your local dealer in gurdy-related cds [inc mine].
While on the subject of unashamed advertising a good source of strings is
www.boisbuis.com , Marie et Pascal Cranga, don't be put off by it being French,
Marie can communicate in English.
  Philip

      hello
New poster here. Name Roddy McKenzie go under the AKA of Dr. Uid. Live near
Norwich in the UK.
I have an Helmut Gotschy rennaissance Drehleier at the moment with an Abraxas
coming at about Christmas time. My Christmas present to myself. Suich
extravagance!!
Having played music since a toddler (now coming up for 52) the Drehleier is a
new venture for me relatively speaking. I also play violin, guitar, melodeon,
guzheng, and various other whistles and flutes and things but not too well on
the wind front. Musical taste is very wide (and I mean V E R Y ) in
fact almost everything except country and what we call ford escort music here
which is that thump thump stuff with a bass line and a beat for 70 minutes at a
time and nothing else....
I play for morris dancing (I also dance), traditional festivals, a local
Pagan group, historical re-enactment and also in rock and blues bands sometimes
acoustic sometimes electric. I don't tend to do folk sessions because I feel
the music gets killed by unsympathetic repetition and where you have a large
number of players gathered together and not organised it tends to be a bit of a
mess. I can see how it can be good fun for some but for me no, I'll pass. I do
like sessions where small groups do it in turn. I think that works.
I would like to know sources for music suitable for a Drehleier/Vielle a
Roue. I would also like to know the best chanter strings to buy. I am getting
the usual violin tone but when I tune down on the chanters the tone goes. I
need heavier guage strings. I would like it to sound more like a cello when
played with a single chanter. perhaps someone knows this on here which saves me
hours and hours of experimentation. I prefer the Chabenat/Loibner sound to the
Bouffard/ Eaton sound if that makes sense to you although I listen to all of
them and like them a lot. I would prefer to find that sound.
I am also experimenting with electronics if anyone likes that.
Phew long post to start with! Excuse that but I'll calm down after a while if
anything comes through to help me.
  Roddy
