hello
New poster here. Name Roddy McKenzie go under the AKA of Dr. Uid. Live
near Norwich in the UK.
I have an Helmut Gotschy rennaissance Drehleier at the moment with an
Abraxas coming at about Christmas time. My Christmas present to myself.
Suich extravagance!!
Having played music since a toddler (now coming up for 52) the Drehleier
is a new venture for me relatively speaking. I also play violin, guitar,
melodeon, guzheng, and various other whistles and flutes and things but
not too well on the wind front. Musical taste is very wide (and I mean V
E R Y ) in fact almost everything except country and what we call
ford escort music here which is that thump thump stuff with a bass line
and a beat for 70 minutes at a time and nothing else....
I play for morris dancing (I also dance), traditional festivals, a local
Pagan group, historical re-enactment and also in rock and blues bands
sometimes acoustic sometimes electric. I don't tend to do folk sessions
because I feel the music gets killed by unsympathetic repetition and
where you have a large number of players gathered together and not
organised it tends to be a bit of a mess. I can see how it can be good
fun for some but for me no, I'll pass. I do like sessions where small
groups do it in turn. I think that works.
I would like to know sources for music suitable for a Drehleier/Vielle a
Roue. I would also like to know the best chanter strings to buy. I am
getting the usual violin tone but when I tune down on the chanters the
tone goes. I need heavier guage strings. I would like it to sound more
like a cello when played with a single chanter. perhaps someone knows
this on here which saves me hours and hours of experimentation. I prefer
the Chabenat/Loibner sound to the Bouffard/ Eaton sound if that makes
sense to you although I listen to all of them and like them a lot. I
would prefer to find that sound.
I am also experimenting with electronics if anyone likes that.
Phew long post to start with! Excuse that but I'll calm down after a
while if anything comes through to help me.
Roddy
