These are designed to be supported in the center, which is just what we need for the HG. They're expensive, but they look better than banjo machines, and they seem to be more ruggedly built, i.e. will last longer. > An H-G peg is only supported at one end ? Well, I actually think of them as being supported in the middle: the head (which you turn) sticks out the top of the peghead, the center is supported by the wood of the peghead, and the string gets wrapped around the narrow end, inside the peghead.
