I suppose so, although honestly I never thought much about it when I started making cranks and knobs - I just assumed it was a given that the knob shouldn't rub against the crank. I have seen the occasional setup where the knob was loose-fitting and there was some kind of slippery washer-like spacer between the knob and crank to stabilize things, but I don't find that concept particularly appealing...
