Thank you, Chris, Matthew and Simon, for your help.
Good things to think about, there. I think the fact that the neck
of the knob I have isn't tall enough is probably a bigger issue
than the diameter, though it is also too small. I believe I'll go
with 1.5" (3.8 cm) diameter and 2" (5.1 cm) overall height
including neck. Hmm, the height of the knob itself.... less than an
inch (2.5 cm)...?
Matt, I can't picture what the "1/8 inch gap between the inner end
of the knob and the crank" means. Please explain a little further,
if you think it an important point.
All the best,
Barbara
Sure, Barbara.
The shaft on which the knob turns sticks out about 1/8" before its
threads (which hold it to the S-shaped crank) begin. So when the
knob shaft is screwed tightly into the crank, that gap remains
between the crank and the knob. If there were *no* gap there at
all, the knob would rub against the crank when you played. It's
important in that respect, of course, but otherwise as long you can
play without your fingers striking the crank, and as long as the
knob is comfortable and rotates freely with no "looseness" or
rattles, it should be fine.
Does this help?

Yes, it does. Thank you, Matt. I hadn't thought of that detail,
before. My husband probably did, but it hadn't occurred to me.
