With MDF I suppose if you immersed the wheel in water it would swell
(but if you keep your instrument in a bucket of water, that's likely
to be the least of your problems). For normal use, however, humidity
does not affect MDF. It is, in fact, made from wood particles in a
resin binder. They use MDF in bathroom furniture *because* it is
basically impervious to humidity. The maker I know who uses it now
does not even put banding on his wheels. He says the raw MDF edge
(well, the finished MDF edge, actually) is fine and can be treated
just like wood in terms of rosin.
