A WEEKEND SEMINAR WITH DR. AZZAM TAMIMI

ORGANISERS : Muslim Professionals Forum (MPF) & Jamaah Islah Malaysia (JIM) & Malaysian National Insurance (MNI)

THEME : ISLAMIC POLITICAL THEORY

DATE : 2 3 April 2005 ( Sat & Sun ), 9 am 6 pm

VENUE : Dewan Sri Pinang, MNI Twin Towers, Kuala Lumpur  (sponsored by MNI)

The aftermath of September 11, 2001 has much moulded the multitudes of  analyses of the interplay between Islam and contemporary politics. The islamophobes have condemned Islam to the backyard of history, irrelevant to post-modern society and hostile to the egalitarian pursuits of freedom and justice. Whilst others, albeit few,  have rushed to her defense as a religion of harmony and peaceful coexistence.

A salient deficiency of these political commentaries, have been their inability, conscious or otherwise, to discourse in terms of the voluminous and sophisticated traditions of the Islamic political heritage.

We hope to fill this void by facilitating a just, mature and well developed understanding of the history of Islamic political thought. Classical and contemporary Muslim scholars have continously drawn inspiration from the Quran and traditions of the prophet and his companions to construct robust political theories and systems, alive to the spirit of the faith and the demands of the times. A deep appreciation and profound understanding of this discipline of Islamic political thought as promulgated by these sincere, committed and knowledgeable Muslim thinkers is a key objective of this seminar.
