Yes that is exact scenario, copying preview and not live. I expect CMS editor to handle this situation better, so not only check for publicationDate, but also for presence of document in live. Displaying just based on publicationDate, is obviously not complete, signals that document is published which isn't present in live at all. Since the situation that you ended up with is not reproducible from

What can be done:
0] When copying copy both preview & www.
1] Run the publishall WDBP with plugin.1.configuration.onlypublished set
    to true.
2] Run the propertiesdelete WDBP to remove the publicationDate property.
