Hiebert a hero for going to jail, says former Malaysian detainee

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 12 (AFP) - A Canadian journalist imprisoned in Malaysia over an article he wrote was Tuesday described as a "hero" by an opposition politician who had been jailed in similar circumstances.

Journalist Murray Hiebert "exemplifies the integrity and courage of a journalist standing up for press freedom that Malaysian journalists should emulate," said Lim Guan Eng.

Hiebert, bureau chief of the Far Eastern Economic Review, was freed Monday after serving a month in jail for contempt of court over an article headlined "See you in court."

This discussed the merits of a suit filed by the wife of a Court of Appeal judge against the International School of Kuala Lumpur for dropping her son from the debating team. His case attracted international concern about press freedom in Malaysia.

Lim, deputy secretary-general of the Democratic Action Party headed by his father, was himself freed recently after being jailed a year for sedition.

In a leaflet and in public comments, Lim had questioned the attorney general's handling of a statutory rape case involving a ruling party politician and a 15-year-old girl.

"Murray's time in prison serves to remind us how press freedom in Malaysia is similarly behind bars," Lim said in a statement criticising local journalists for failing to speak out against Hiebert's sentence.

He said Hiebert's willingness to go to jail "and steely determination to prevail against the forces of censorship has made him a hero in the eyes of Malaysians who are fighting for press freedom."

Hiebert, 50, was due to leave for Hong Kong on Tuesday before being reunited with his wife and children in the United States and taking up a new post in Washington for the Review.

He has been unable to leave the country since his passport was impounded at the start of legal proceedings in 1997.
