Hadi expects Terengganu to fully observe Islamic rules
KUALA TERENGGANU, Wed. - Abdul Hadi Awang, the Menteri Besar of the newly-elected Pas State Government, said he envisioned Terengganu being a State fully observing Islamic rules. Speaking after a rehearsal for official swearing-in of the new State Government scheduled for tomorrow, he said his immediate step would be to make urgent amendments to principles and policies deemed to be contrary to Islamic values. He said it was also to fulfil his party's pledge to improve the lot of the poor. "This is in line with putting Islam above all else. We're duty-bound to honour the people's mandate by proving that Islam is the best," he said. Abdul Hadi received the letter of appointment as Menteri Besar from Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin of Terengganu at Istana Badariah here yesterday. Asked whether the new State Government would victimise or go on a witch-hunt of Barisan Nasional supporters, Hadi said: "We treat everyone as citizens regardless of whether they support or don't support us." However, he said, the Pas-led State Government would give priority to deserving cases. "It is common knowledge that Pas supporters were victimised by the previous State Government. As such we'll give priority to the victimised lot, including State Government staff," he added. In last Monday's general election, Pas unseated the Barisan Nasional State Government after 40 years by winning 28 of the 32 State Legislative Assembly seats in Terengganu. - Bernama |
