Part II Kabbani exchanged salams with us and we shook hands with him, yet, it was a
difficult situation for us. We were in a dilemma. Personally, I was a little concerned
as I had received several threatening calls in the past from his followers telling me
that if I pursued the issue pertaining to his speech at the State Department, I would
face dire consequences. The presence of his entourage was also a matter of security
for me. There exists a unanimous decision of several Muslim organizations that
prohibits us sharing any forum with Kabbani or his group, until he retracts or proves
the statements he uttered at the State Department a few years ago. In the statement
Kabbani accused 80 percent of Islamic centers and mosques in the U.S. to be run by
extremists. He also implied that Muslim students were capable of carrying nuclear
bombs in their back packs and that Muslim women who were donning hijab during the day
were flirting with European officials during night. I personally!
learned from a source in Washington that the National Terrorism Commission reportedly
used Kabbani's statement about students to recommend that all foreign students should
be monitored and their change of field of study should be studied closely. Since
Kabbani has neither retracted the statement nor proved it, the decision to avoid
sharing any forum with him still stands. Hence, Dr. Hathout and I decided instantly
that we would not stay at the function. On the basis of our understanding of the Quran
and Sunna we decided to communicate to Dr. Hashmi that we would no longer speak at the
function as it would imply that we were sharing the forum with Kabbani. We told him
that we would not betray Muslim unity and that we would stick by the collective
decision of Muslims even if it meant that we had to leave the Momin Lodge without
speaking.
