Thanks for so fast an answer.
The extraction was presumably the cause, which had been done within a 
FAT hard disk

I extracted again within the /root hard dick and got the right 
capitalized name for NEWS (and some others).

So I tried again (from a root session )....but failed again:

checking for python... /usr/bin/python
checking for a version of Python >= '2.1.0'... yes
checking for the distutils Python package... yes
checking for Python include path... -I/usr/include/python2.5
checking for Python library path... -L/usr/lib/python2.5 -lpython2.5
checking for Python site-packages path... /usr/lib/python2.5/site-packages
checking python extra libraries...  -lpthread -ldl  -lutil
checking python extra linking flags... -Xlinker -export-dynamic
checking whether collected informations are consistent... no
configure: error:
  Could not link test program to Python. Maybe the main Python library has been
  installed in some non-standard library path. If so, pass it to configure,
  via the LDFLAGS environment variable,
  or use the --with-python-incdir and --with-python-libdir directices 
respectively.

in fact Python 2.5 works fine in conjunction with the present 74 
installed Knoda.....

so it seems I need some further help
