Thanks to you, I began to understand.
Now, the Python 5.1 on my machine has been installed, from the source, I
guess, by a Python specialist, who has access to my last daughter, a
good reason to let him have access to my computer....

So I googled for python-devel....and found

http://rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2html/search.php?query=python-devel
who give only 2.4.3-8...and not for Mandriva, claiming that its
reference is http://www.python.org/ and on this last site I found
http://www.python.org/ftp/python/2.5.1/ with no mention of any "devel"

Now I found also that
http://distrib-coffee.ipsl.jussieu.fr/pub/linux/MandrivaLinux/official/iso/2007.1/mandriva-linux-2007-spring-free-dvd-i586.idx

is the first Mandriva distro to use a 2.5, however a 2.5.2 for
libpython. Although my OS is Mandriva 2006 I configured Easy urpmi with
this recent distro.
Then if asking RPMDrake to install this recent version, it request about
30 "dependences", so I think I have better to wait to have moved to a
more recent Mandriva before to try to upgrade Knoda to 8.4

Thanks to the egyptian god and DJ for his clear an competent explanations.
