You won't pay, but the 250,000 people that pay $9.95+ a month to EQ and other online MMORPG's do.. I suspect, even if it costs then 1/2 of their audience.. it would be worth the while.
And yes you will pay - or you will have to sacrifice the right to demand 'server patches, client patches, security patches' 4+ years after the product has been released!
