I was thinking the same thing, botman.  Then I thought about how the games
on steam would be really hard to mod.  All the files and everything are
hidden away in that cache file.  Unless the make an unpacker for the cache
file, it wouldn't be wise for modders to get the games over steam.  Unless
of course, they use a different method later on, which makes modding easier
over Steam.

So, I think that info from Gabe is important, because we should know which
Half-Life 2 package would be the best to buy for modding.  I also noticed
they are thinking about offering Half-Life 2 by itself, singleplayer only,
without mods.  That would probably be the cheapest to buy, and a lot of
people might choose that option.  If they do, there are less people out
there to play the mods, which would have some kind of affect on the modding
community.  "Oh, you bought the singleplayer only version of Half-Life 2
without mods, so you can't play this mod...go spend more money."  I doubt
many people would do that.

So, this does have a little bit to do with the hlcoders list.
