thats fine for music. but we're talking about sound effects. the engine supports mp3, so why can't they simply make the emit_sound / playsound calls support mp3 too (ie: like raven's version of quake3 engine. or my build of quake2 (mind you, mine plays ogg's due to licensing instead of mp3s though)
