It would probably be pretty difficult to write it yourself with no
experience, but certainly not impossible.  My first ever programming project
was a Source mod...

If you are or think you might be a lunatic who actually enjoys this sort of
thing then I would say go for it.  Personally though I would never have made
it past the first week if I had tried the widely espoused model of learning
some simpler programming language first then spending 6 months doing C++
exercises out of books before attempting anything I found interesting or
useful.  Barreling right in worked best for me, even though it required
going back later to fix early mistakes.
