The thing is you need to find one of those horizontal blower fans designed
specifically for 1U cases. I haven't found them anywhere..but I haven't
looked that hard.
If you want to use a dual board with 1 CPU for now, and expand later, go
with the pre built solution. A generic 1U case just isn't going to cut it
in the air flow (cooling) department.
If you're strictly going to go single CPU, you should be fine. A Duron at
750 to 1000Mhz should be able to handle 40 players easy enough, unless
you're running a bunch of other shit too: hlstats, sql server, admin_mod,
etc. BUT, you still need to find a good horizontal CPU cooler
solution...I'll see what I can dig up. Then again, who knows what this
upcoming HL and CS upgrade will do to min hardware req's.
Your colo situation prompting this project?
BTW, if you end up ditching the VP6 and dual 700s, how much you want for the
combo?
