I'd say no. I'd think a usb mic would work like usb speakers and not require
a soundcard, but they sorta emulate a soundcard. At least thats how my
friend's usb speakers work.
As for mics, I've got a $14 labtec headset, and ppl say I come thru as
clearly as on a telephone. I think this is because of the noise cancelling
feature, and that I spent 20 min tweaking it. Please spend time playing with
your recording levels, you'll discover that you won't need that 20db boost
that adds so much noise. I suggest the 'voice_loopback 1' command to see how
you sound, and to try playing with 'voice_maxgain' to get your voice to a
nice level.
