I think personally, Linux is a doddle. I moved all my CS servers onto a Linux platform, mainly for the performance increase. I've got a dual pIII 966 with 1 gig of RAM which comfortably runs 10X16 player CS servers. It's also running apache and mySQL and a PB server monitoring about 8 servers. On Win2k, I could only manage about 7 before there was loads of choke and loss, that's before I even thought about IIS and other services.

There is a version that can be installed on a FAT16 or FAT32 system without re-partitioning your hard drive called Dragon Linux ... http://www.dragonlinux.net It's like a 290M ZIP download ... It seems to be based on Slackware Linux ... All my systems are NTFS so I couldn't try it, but I do have a Mandrake box up and I'm learning Linux ... If you don't like Dragon Linux, they say it is as simple as deleting the subdir that it installs to ... I've installed Red Hat, FreeBSD and Mandrake but don't have any experience with DragonLinux ... So far I have preferred the Mandrake 8.1 distribution, but will eventually bring up a BSD box to have both versions of PC Unix running (Linus's version and AT&T's version) ... If I ever get to know Linux better, I'll try a HLDS server on that platform and see how it goes ... Running W2K and Linux, I have seen an incredible performance boost in Linux with simple machines ... Linux certainly seems to shine in the arena of cheaper hardware ... In other words, you can use Linux on a P2 350mHz and it would compare to W2K on a P3 750mHz ... I don't mean to start any Linux/Win flame wars ... I am just of the assumption that both have different things to offer, and I ain't proud, I'll exploit them both, but heck, Linux is FREE! If someone in the Linux world would write a plugin (or mod I think they call it) to interpret VBScript via ASP pages, there'd be no stopping Linux and XP would die a quick death ... _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds
