After you turn off all the crap that comes with 2000 or 2003 server you get
pretty much the same thing I think.

After all ... HLDS only needs to open a few sockets. It's not as if it's
like Exchange server where the OS would matter.

Theoretically you could run on NT and get reasonable performance.

The more services you turn off and the less modules or DLL's loaded the
better.

This means more RAM and processor cycles.

HLDS is just a console app that needs so much memory and a few UPD sockets
... That's all.
