Intel have no such restriction that I'm aware of, however the larger
cached versions will perform better in the typical role that a high
cpu no. machine entails.
There is no 4XX series AMD Opteron, only 1s, 2s, and 8s.
Also, Intel does have such a restriction. I checked for it on
"developer.intel.com" by clicking on "Design Components and
Products" > "Processors", then selecting Xeon and Xeon MP. Says
it all.
