I quit the clan I was involved in. I still run the server farm now known as "=]NOCLANS[="
Since I changed to "noclans free agent" status, I have yet to ban anyone. So far everyone I see that I think might be cheating turn out to be doing something legit. I'm sure I will eventually spot a cheater and when I do there will be a published adjudication and appeal process because I might be wrong.
However, I find it interesting that without all the clan arrogance and primadonna "1337" clan personalities, there are simply few to no cheating accuasations made. Not even in the log's say lines are there enough "so-and-so is hacking" instances to warrant any investigations.
hmmmmm.... How many of those "global bans" were indeed unjust? Apparently only the myg0t rotating ad banner name changer and demo recorded speed hackers can be called legitimate catches and bans. Everything else is subjective.
Live and learn I guess.
Perhaps we should simply notify the VAC team via one-way no reply expected emails when we have a "suspect" steam id and let the VAC team do their thing.
And yes I am the one who started this thread and my opinion is the thread has survived much longer than expected. As for the steam id's I requested be unbanned? It was an entire "clan" involved and it was a stupid and very arrogant episode of stupidity. And the ban list went far and wide.
It costs money to buy a new steam account.
To compensate the "victims" for the cost of buying new steam accounts they are now enjoying a free 24 slot server for as long as I am running the host.
Please use extreme care when considering a "global ban" folks. Otherwise you may be acting out of arrogance and stupidity like I did.
Me? Life is better without the clan hassles, conflicts, and back stabbing parties. And I have dropped the number of servers per host to 11. Go ahead. have a good belly laugh and say you told me so.
Adios....

Mikee is absolutely correct. Large public communities have no definitive tools for controlling miscreants. The only real solution is ample and diligent admins...along with heavily modified plugins to help maintain the peace. If you only run private servers, the situation is completely different.
We run public DoD and CoD/HoB servers but keep our CS:S and HL2DM servers private. The pressures of admining private servers are a mere fraction of the public servers. I can't imagine the headaches that large public communities like Jolt and GameSpy Arena contend with. Our traffic is lighter on the private servers, but it's highly qualified, regulars only, so there's little need for hardcore admin coverage. One less headache for us.
With all that said, there's no possible way to guarantee that innocent players won't be banned. That's why we have a system for stating your case and having it reviewed by the admin staff. It's a method of checks and balances for an imperfect system. Do we make mistakes? Sure, but not very many. Can we enforce our rules and standards? Yes. And, most importantly, is our community happy with the results? Feel free to ask them yourself. :)
