Oh, and you can probably blame me for bz2.
Why bz2? It's open and patent-free. It compresses better than zip, and has fast decompression. It's not ubiquitous like zip, but is widely used.
After a minute of searching, here are some GUI windows compressors that support bz2 (I haven't tried any of them, but they're certainly out there):
