Important information is: 1. what addons are being used, 2. what O/S, 3. what ticrate and 4. what fps_max 5. highres timer (win32) or 1000HZ linux kernal? 6. hltv/tv enabled? spectators?
also, bots on CS:S servers totally skew cpu utilization :) for example (since I don't run a CS1.6 server): for my HLDM server I use: ==================== XP Pro, 2.0GHz AMD 2600+ 512MB memory +sys_ticrate 1000 +fps_max 1000 + highres timer server runs typically at 512FPS with occasional spikes down to 320FPS sv_maxrate 7500 sv_maxupdaterate 15 I get 9 players max on a 1.5M/320Kb dsl uplink so that's 35.6kb / player max utilization I don't allow snarks on my server which can easily double that number. CPU utilization varies from map to map, worstcase is 50% with a full server. CPU Utilization is easily controllable by changing the fps_max. a good CPU baseline with my above ticrate and fps_max is 100MHz per player. I ran the identical server on an 850MHz P3 for years and saw up to 80% cpu utilization under the same worst-case conditions. I only run metamod and botman's stripper2 addon. In testing HL2DM I see much higher per-player uplink usage (around 52kb per player) in testing CS:S I see 42kb to 45kb per-player uplink usage. I find myself being asked quite often about what CPU/net requirements it takes to run a server. I have answers based upon our internal playtesting but I would also like to hear what you guys use in the wild. So, my questions are: 1) What speed CPU do you use for a 32 player HL1 server (CS 1.6) 2) What speed CPU do you use for a 32 player Source server (CS:S) 3) How much bandwidth per user do you allow for a HL1 server 4) How much bandwidth per user do you allow for a Source server 5) How much difference is there in these requirements for other mods? - Alfred
