There was a heapsize discussion recently on the Linux email list (but I did testing on Win32) that has this information:
http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg40650.html Summary: best practice is to leave it alone (IE: don't use it) Using it will not improve the performance of your server and could hurt it set too low. There is no effect for map changes. The only time you might want to change the heapsize is if you are running a custom map that has too many entities or is overly complex (so you probably won't run it normally anyway). I used to need -heapsize under the old WON HLDS but I've never needed it since we moved to Steam. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Spectre" To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, June 21, 2006 4:53 AM Subject: [hlds] -heapsize How does it actually work? I am using -heapsize 131072 for my HLDSs, its reserving RAM but not really taking more then 60mb. I tryed different kind of this value, but dont really see a difference. So the questions are: -Can too low / too high -heapsize slow down server? -Will it take as much RAM as it needs if i wont set it? -Does it make difference for server FPS or for speed in map change? I got a lot of memory in my server, so i just want to know how to tweak it for best performance. I am using Windows, but insteresting if its working the same on linux. _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds
