Correct me if i'm wrong, but wasn't it Emperor Constantine who set the
date to Winter solstice so that it would therefore be better accepted by
his people as it coincide with the pagan calibrations. But his desire to
follow Christianity was initially a farce as he feared some sort of
uprising as it was the current 'in' thing and he didn't want a revolt etc ?
