My dedicated server is running ok but no one can connect, same thing when I
try any of my clients.

If I run a listenserver (map stalkyard in console for example) it starts up
momentarily, I might get into the map and run around for a second or two
then I get disconencted and in console I see this repeating over and over:

Disconnect: Response timed out
Disconnect: Response timed out
Disconnect: Response timed out

So I'm presuming that anyone that hasn't restarted steam in the last day or
so can still connect.

Servers, even hacked ones have no control over clients displaying ads.

I'm not familiar how the ads are being displayed, so I can't comment on
whether you can stop it from happening at the server, or maybe at a map
level. I would not dismiss the option of actually stopping it from
happening
at the server level, but I would not do it personally - I'm allergic to
Land
Shark Attacks.

I wonder if a recent Steam update broke the listen servers? My dedicated
hl1mp:source server is running fine, but I haven't updated it recently,
either (been there, done that, still smarting from my recent bout of
stupidity...). My client can connect just fine, others are there now.
However, I can't start a dedicated server - it crashes. Don't have time to
play with it right now. Looks like there are only 3 servers up right now,
2
are dedicated, and I don't know about the third.

I thought you ran a dedicated server? Or am I thinking about someone else?

It looks like HLDM:Source is dead at the moment, I can't even run a
listenserver right now.

Loose what account? My Steam accounts are not tied to my servers in any
way,
nor does Valve have any way to determine which accounts are mine even if
they did find I had a hacked server that was not displayig any ads.
OTOH,
I
hope we don't have to hack servers to disable advertisements. Valve
looks
the other way when we have to hack content to get a hl1mp source server
working, but hacking your server to disable advertisements is a real
good
way to get the Valve Land Sharks to come and visit you. Valve, like many
companies, has grown to the point where they are not adverse to pissing
off
a few people if they can make more money in the long run, and they have
a
lot more money to throw at lawyers then most of us on this list do.
Pity,
really, but it seems to inevitably happen to companies as they become
more
and more successful

Look at this from Valve's perspective. They know that advertisements
will
cause them to loose customers and the associated revenue. They also know
that advertisements generate revenue. The real questions is, will they
gain
more from the advertisements then they will loose from the loss of
customers? Valve thinks they will. Only time will tell whether it was a
wise
move or not.

You are not allowed to remove them, according to Valve.
You are at risk os possibly losing your account if you do.
This is a guess at this time about losing the account. But I do know
for
that, that you are not allowed to.
I'm trying to get an FAQ made up for all the info that pertains to the
ads.
