Is there any way to check if the server can accept remote connections?
Would "telnet ip port" work? Is it tcp or udp? Is it possible to write
a perl script that could try to connect to the server? It's a bit of a
pain arranging someone else to get online and try every time I try
something slightly different (only for it not to work again).

  Note: -ip is your lan addy of the server
