Ken,
The orangebox (EP2) version of the source engine (and materials and
models, etc) is not compatible with the current EP1 version of the source
games, IE: EP1 / HL2 / CSS / DODS / HL2DM / HLDM:S

There are a number of important new features in the EP2 engine that are very
desirable for all the Source games, but Valve doesn't want to create a huge
conversion mess that requires trying to make all the games work all at once
on the new (updated) engine.

Thus the "orangebox".

EP2, TF2 and Portal are under the orangebox folder and work with the new
version of the engine while all the existing EP1 compatible source engine
games are still in their original folders for a while and will still work as
they are.

Eventually each EP1 based game will be updated and migrated over into the
"orangebox" (EP2 engine) folder.

This way Valve can gracefully and safely migrate all the content over as
they have time.

And of course, all the HL1 games will just stay the way they are.

These changes will have to apply to both clients and servers, and the EP2
server engine will also require any existing plugins to be updated.

What are you talking about? The current games are running on the new
engine.
Source is Source is Source is Source. There is not an OLD source engine,
or
a NEW source engine.. its just all the SAME source engine.

Yes, I know it's still very far away, but I was just wondering if we
could
get a comment on a VERY rough estimate of when we may expect to see
current
source games ported to the new engine? A week, a month, a year? Just
wanna
have some sort of idea when I should start planning :)

Thanks

The "orangebox" engine is the new source engine.
The older source games (css, dods, hl2dm etc.) will be ported some
weeks/months later to this new engine release.
So just be patient :)
