Its a sad reality. Here in South America most of players has pirated copies of games. It would be great if we could do something... But its a culture problem. Most of South American people thinks that paying for software is stupid, because its cheaper to get a pirated copy.
Who started this thread is a Brazilian. In brazil i think there is a 50% of steam players, but it is excepcional because they are the most developed country of south america. But other countries like Argentina have a very worst situation. (i don't know if this number is accurate but my aproach is below 1% of original games) In Europe or North America, most of valve games are cheap, because people gets their income in dolars or euros... But for south america, 10 dolars are like 30 to you. Games are still buyable, but its not as easy as in other countries. I have my own steam copy, but because i work and i realy enjoy the games and i think piratery is delincuence... But when i was young, i used to have all pirate software cause my parents didnt want to expend money in computer games for me. Parents doesnt like to spend money in computer games for their sons so its impossible for kids without a credit card to buy the games. Me and some peruvian helpers, are making some kind of campaign to let kids to get easier access to steam games and we are having some exit. (6 Half-Life copies in the first month). We also do not charge anything to the original price. We do this only because we want to stop the piratery. I am planning next month to put a banner in my website to convince more people to stop robbing. Its horrorous how with excessive impunity there is a street stand that sells pirate DVD's and music almost in each corner. Police doesn't put this people in jail because it's better to have them there and not robbing or drug dealing to survive... They are robbing anyway, but not directly and at least, unviolently. Yes, my country sucks! but i love it, and i know some day it will be better ^^ I must say, my server used to be mixed, because a steam server in south america is an empty server... Now primary server is not mixed anymore because steam players cannot join protocol 47 servers. Now we have two servers... a very little steam server almost always empty, and a non steam p47 server always full. I want to keep my campaign going but its hard if steam players haves troubles to join most important servers of their region. I hate having to do that, but there is no choice. I do my better effort to convince the people to buy original software. Be sure that if only a 30% of players had steam i would make my server steam. But i only know 6 steam HLDM players here in Argentina, and 5 of them bougth their original copy througt me. And my server if the most important HLDM server in Argentina, its always full even at nights (13/14 players constantly with a slot reserved for admins). So 6 in thousands is a very veeery low percentage. Please dont look at me as the bad guy of the movie. Non steam players are not here because of me. After Pheek, the only latin american server was Terra and it was steam. Terra server was empty... I opened a nonsteam homemade server and it went full in just minutes. So it's not because of me that this people exists. On the contrary, i try to teach people that pirating is delincuence and thats why some people is buying origininal games througt me. In other words, if i were not doing this then nobody here would be buying the original game, because they never could have the oportunity to know what HLDM is. I know lots of people will talk back to give their arguments... But if you are not living here, please, just give your opinion, but dont judge me because may be you cannot understand a reality wich is far from your everyday reality. I am not doing this because i want you to help non steam servers, i am just doing this for you to know what happens, and maybe together we can find a solution to this problem. Finaly i have to say that the market here for software is the worst in the world... Argentinian game developers doesn't publish their games in their own country. This is the case of Scratches. An award winning Argentinian game. Done completly in english, and published in lots of countries all over the world, but not it his home country. I hate this reality...
