Heh! I live on the west coast USA, and they seem to like to release the updates during most folks' commute time. :) But, msleeper's right - Friday updates don't seem to happen all that often.
We used to get heads-up e-mails for the TF2 updates, which was nice, and probably all that's really necessary. A couple hours' notice would be plenty - then I can get one of my other admins to run the update if I'm not going to be able to run it.
