They do run servers and direct mainly the new players to them first. They could run 1000's of TF2-servers themselves but then the most important thing would be missing. Communities that run servers, tie players to particular games as there are familiar faces playing on those servers that keeps getting them back over again. Communities will go down and new ones will be made but if the people who have been here since the start are starting to drop off, then they are doing something wrong. They need to listen our needs too.

I'm getting nothing for doing this and thats fine with me but once i get bored or some rule, change or whatever is set that i don't like, i will stop. So far, there hasn't been any. Though i am a bit disappointed over the years for many things they have or haven't done.

Usually games mostly die after a year or two of their release. Some of their games havent' received content updates for long time and they still thrive due to communities build around those games.

Or they could just do like some servers are already doing and throw obnoxious ads in clients faces.

Having said that, Valve already runs their own TF2 servers and I doubt they're anywhere near full at the moment.

We're the one providing Valve's player base with a place to play.
Without us, they would have to foot the bill for every server
that's required to handle all the various games players, which as
we've seen a-la other companies retiring games and shutting down
the servers, is expensive. Tens of thousands of dollars a month in
bandwidth, electricity and colo or managed rental overhead that
    we're completely negating for them.

We're the ones giving Valve free money by having a wealth of
servers for their players to play on so they stay entertained and
buy more virtual pixel hats to wear.

Valve is one of the most involved developers because it benefits
their bottom line. They're a company out to make dollars in
business, do not forget that for one second.
