Correct. The windows servers shouldn't need the sound caches, but in the
meantime copying over a sound.cache file will prevent the crash.

This still needs a real fix, but the workaround I found is to replace the
left4dead2/sound/sound.cache file on the server with the one from a client.

That did it. However, having spent the last few hours trying to get it to run,

L4D2 beta is buggy and won't run.

No matter what I do, it crashes on startup. I have a clean L4D2 beta install,
no plugins at all. Start server, with or without a map specified, and it
immediately crashes. No log entry, no errors that I can see, no crash dumps,
just poof gone. The console comes and goes so fast I can't see what it is
saying.

I know from (painful) experience that you have to get the -game parameter right
or it will do this, but I'm using -game left4dead2 like I always have. Has this
changed with the beta server?

If I start it up without -console, you get the gui, and if I start the server
from the gui, it still immediately crashes.

I reverted to the non-beta L4D2 and it fired right up as expected.

Is anyone running a L4D2 beta server?

FWIW this is running on Windows 7 64 bit.

Then I have no clue how to actually get it. I installed the non-beta version,
then installed with +app_update "222860 -beta beta", and I got the exact same
file set. Either the non-beta is now the same as the beta, or there is some
other way to get the beta that I don't know of...as it is, either way gives me
version 2.1.2.3 5310, and I don't know if that is the beta version or not.

The beta is definitely available via SteamCMD.

Tried that, still no update. I'm going to do a clean install and see if it
gives me a different file set.

Can anyone verify the version for the beta versus the version for the public
build?

Is it possible that Valve just didn't get around to actually making the beta
available via steamcmd?

Last time I checked, the -beta beta has to be part of the appupdate command,
like this:

+app_update "222860 -beta beta"

When I use -beta beta, it tells me it is already up to date and AFAICT it
doesn't update anything. How can I tell if I have the beta build or not? Or do
I need to do a clean install with -beta beta?

Left 4 Dead 2 has a new dedicated server build available as a beta. Add "-beta
beta" to your SteamCMD command line to get the beta. This is the updated build
that will be released to clients next week, so it is NOT interoperable with the
current public client.

Due to updated build scripts and a regeneration of the vpk's, this depot will
be about 2GB smaller than the pre-SteamPipe version.
