yes you should keep querying them for the next 2 weeks or so, and yes, they
will be shutdown once we roll the userbase to steam (i.e make the steam
update mandatory).

It is the location of the server itself, and the server admin decides this
value (via the sv_region cvar).

Its not the masters region. All the master servers are in sync however (they
all contain complete information about every server at this time).

Yes, there will be. Half-Life servers dynamically get the list of master
servers available through steam. This allows us to add more servers on
demand and we can also put servers in bandwidth hotspots. This dynamic
behavior has removed the need for DNS entries for each machine. Once we are
more aware of the load patterns we will assign a hlmaster2.hlauth.net that
you will be able to use.
