"There are about five people who are currently testing the linux server. I know and have met them all personally. It's just the most efficient way to test something right before we ship it."
That is the answer I was looking for. If I seemed rude or angry with Valve, that was not my intent. I am simply trying to understand why valve takes so damn long to test anything on linux. Check your server list for beta 1.6. Nothing but 150-400 ping listen servers. How do you expect any client to test anything when the servers are nothing but a bunch of cable/dsl listen servers. The biggest complaint I hear is there are no good servers to play on. Maybe if they would stop waiting until the last minute to release the linux version, they could get more players and have better quality control during beta testing. The truth of the matter is that MOST, not all, most of the people with the greatest amount of bandwidth and server resources in general...are running nix..not win32. So like many long time nix gaming admins, Im tired of having the resources to do something, but lack the ability because there is not a port for linux. Hence my frustration with valve, EA and others concerning their support of linux. . As far as these answers: >Possibly people who have proven themselves as compitent admins running servers that are well populated all the time. And people who are running different distributions od OS's across a veriety of hardware.> Ive run hlds on distros of RH from 5.x to 8.x. As far as populated servers. I have several servers which are full 24/7. As far as being a competent admin. I won't even waste text other than to say you don't get the community I have for the length of time I have had it, were I not competent both as a server op and as owner of my community. >I think it's possible for a person who has been running s server for months to be more qualified than a person who has been running s server for years> Possible, but extremely unlikely. Only thru long experience with HLDS and knowledge of the game and server itself does that ability come from. Are there guys who live and breathe linux who know more from a technical aspect? yes, but that doesn't mean they know what is needed or the best and most efficient way to run HLDS. >I think it's safe to assume you won't be on that list now.> Well considering there are only 5 testers, yes. But not because of my statement. The only people that statement should offend is someone who feels the statement is true and needs to defend themselves. The truth of the matter in many things online IS who you know and whose ass you kiss. To say otherwise would be ignorant. >There, someone answered!> There were no answers in your replies, only sarcasm. Erik who might have had reason to reply in your manner chose not to. Maybe take a lesson from him. If you can not give reasonable and rational answers. Do not bother replying. It only starts flame wars. He (erik) is quite capable of standing up for Valve and himself, he doesn't need an a brown noser to reply for him. ----- Original Message ----- From: "m0gely" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Wednesday, June 25, 2003 12:51 PM Subject: Re: [hlds_linux] Linux STEAM Server Download > Daniel Stroven wrote: > > > My question is why would should it be limited?
