didn't you say you were shutting down your servers 2 months ago ? what changed then ?
-----Original Message----- From: dual_bereta_r0x [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: 11 November 2003 14:00 To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [hlds_linux] 5 reasons i'm shutting down my HL Servers 1. Authentication DIDN'T work. The messages "User ticket expired" and "game is currently unavaliable" are becoming jokes. Maybe inside their LAN auth can be done. Maybe in a few countries with huge pipes auth can be done. Maybe someday auth can be done in a 9 of 10 tries ratio. 2. STEAM don't update. I started an "./steam -update dod [myuser] [mypass] Y" 30 (thirty) days ago, and i still waiting for the update. No, the process didn't died, it still logging each try. Yes, i've removed ~/.steam folder and *.blob files. I think i'll need to upgrade my server network connection to an OC-12 one, my "old" atm pipe don't have enough bandwidth. 3. Hardware requeriments for a DECENT server are almost the same of an Oracle server. I don't mind to run a top hardware but not with this poor performance. My xeons looks like old pentium 133. "But here we run a 20-slot players in our P3-600". Sure. I will change my blade servers to a p3-600 cluster :/ Or should i run ONE server per $2k machine? 4. LACK OF SUPPORT. The last mail messages POSTED by some VALVe guy since the "we're f*cked, someone stoled our future money-tree, help us" message was about "New VAC Detections" and "Temporary downgrade of VAC". Is nice to see they are alive, but will be much more better seeing them fixing game bugs. And leaving things working, of course. The cool thing is: "help us". Where is YOUR help to us? Oh, yes, sorry, you are occupied now. 5. HL2. Yes, this *is* a problem. VALVe put the bug fixing/patching of the *actual* Half-Life game in 8th plan, and now are running out of time to change the leaked source code. I DON'T WANT TO START ANOTHER FLAME WAR, i'm still very disapointed with these guys. My Bf1942 servers with 32 players have better performance than my 16p STEAM servers. Even my BETA MoHAA are better. And are far away stables. Before anyone AGAIN writes "bad troll", "shut up, leave them" and "so, close the door when out", yes, i'm leaving. I don't trust anymore such developers. A year and half since hlds x.1.1.0 and some things insist in not work. -- dual_bereta_r0x -- Alexandre Hautequest ArenaNetwork Lan House & Cyber -- www.arenanetwork.com.br _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux *********************************************** This e-mail and its attachments are confidential and are intended for the above named recipient only.
