The file will only be recreated if you delete it and another client
requests the same resource.

Eric:
My comment (ztmp being left as a bug) was indeed incorrect (my
apologies), but I was really referring to it as a means of tracing if
one of the system files had been downloaded using the dlfile exploit ...
for example, if you look in your valve directory and see a
"server.cfg.ztmp"
the only way that ztmp file could have been created was if someone had
used the exploit to grab your server.cfg file.

It wasn't until after that email that I discovered all the other
"resident"
ztmp files in the map directory.

Are these files always re-created? they never get used again? Your
comment
that:

"ztmp file is stored on the server so the resource won't need to be
compressed again the next time a client requests it."

conflicts with your comment:

"they will be recreated next time a client requests the resource."

This does not affect non-Steam clients/servers.

When a Steam client downloads a resource from a Steam game server (like
a map), the resource is first compressed to save bandwidth. An
associated <resource>.ztmp file is stored on the server so the resource
won't need to be compressed again the next time a client requests it.

If you see these files, you can safely ignore them. You can delete them
if you'd like, but they will be recreated next time a client requests
the resource.
