The massive Updates of VAC seems to be a dream to me, but because of this, I was thinking about a list of wishes about VAC, that will make all admins and all players happy.
- Updates at least weekly Keep Vac alive and make regulary updates. At least once a week! I compare AntiCheatingPrograms with AntiVirusPrograms and nothing is less senseless as AV with obsolte detections. This is the same with AntiCheating. Regulary Updates are neccesary and nothing else will help.
Personally I would like to see a great deal more transparency from VALVe on what cheats are detected/blocked and how.
While it's refreshing to finally see VALVe getting their act together and keeping VAC regularly updated (I'm inclined to think too little too late, but I'm just cynical like that) and giving us notification of said updates, I feel that a message such as:
"* Several new cheat detections added."
Is basically meaningless. It gives us nothing as admins to tell us you're detecting new cheats... we need to know *what* cheats so that we can (a) Be aware of what VAC catches and (b) know what cheat behaviour to look out for (the non-detected remainder)
This 'security through obscurity' approach to cheat detection/prevention is basically rubbish.
I can *guarantee you* that the cheating community help each other keep abreast of exactly what VAC catches and what it doesn't and communicate this at lightning speed.
Server admins, on the other hand, are treated like mushrooms (kept in the dark and fed manure). We have to go and 'investigate' the cheat sites to know what the software that *we* run is capable of doing... because the manufacturer won't tell us. Idiotic.
I feel that it's about time VALVe started to realise that us server operators are essential business *partners*, with the associated necessity of treating us with respect instead of treating us like funghii.
