Well you guys think shell is that much of a waste but imagine being like me. I have a 15KB/Sec upload. I cannot run a server. If I have to upload everything with FTP, eg a mappack of a few hundred MB's I got to let my PC on for days to upload that. With SSH I could simply do a wget and the servers fast connection pulls it down. I have seen no gaming control panel that does that so far. FTP is OK for plugins and stuff but for the persons who like a refreshing mapcycle its a total hell. Also FTP is not that secure if you want to keep that much control for yourself since you can simply install plugins that read other files from the server or put a very high ticrate on. Since there clear guides and distributions only "new admins" will pay twice as much than a dedicated server to get FTP and some crappy webpanel. (Yes people, you can have a dedicated box for 70 bucks a month with a Pentium 2.4 500GB b/w plesk etc. nowadays)
I mean every developed human being can set up a HLDS, even under Linux, now there is an arsenal of guides. (Thanks to communities like counter-server, hostinghacks, ev1servers etc.) I know it isn't a smart move to say this on a list filled with gamingserver companies but I am ready for your point of view and might learn something of it :) _______________________________________________ To unsubscribe, edit your list preferences, or view the list archives, please visit: http://list.valvesoftware.com/mailman/listinfo/hlds_linux
