Well you guys think shell is that much of a waste but imagine being like me.
I have a 15KB/Sec upload. I cannot run a server.

Most end users can't, that's the reason why there are many server
hosting companies, from wich those a huge percentage is not legal. Many
people just go to a datacenter, or hire some servers and then they just
start selling... People should think twice before renting a server and
check the legal backgrounds of that company.

If I have to upload everything with FTP, eg a mappack of a few hundred MB's
I got to let my PC on for days to upload that. With SSH I could simply do a
wget and the servers fast connection pulls it down. I have seen no gaming
control panel that does that so far.

And a whole lot more of things... But then again, everything depends on
the admin of the machine. That's the kind of situation where you really
can check the know-how and tech skills of the company.

FTP is OK for plugins and stuff but for the persons who like a refreshing
mapcycle its a total hell. Also FTP is not that secure if you want to keep
that much control for yourself since you can simply install plugins that
read other files from the server or put a very high ticrate on.

Well FTP is everything you need, at least for a standard user.

Since there
clear guides and distributions only "new admins" will pay twice as much than
a dedicated server to get FTP and some crappy webpanel. (Yes people, you can
have a dedicated box for 70 bucks a month with a Pentium 2.4 500GB b/w plesk
etc. nowadays)

That's nasty... The problem is that in most countries, GSP's are
cartelized under obscene guiderules to control the market. The easiest
way for you to have things running cool, is to find a good ISP with good
peerings and rent there a machine plus bandwidth, and you got root :).
Nowadays it's not that expensive, and I am pretty sure that in every
clan there's a linux guy with enough expertise to handle a linux box.

I mean every developed human being can set up a HLDS, even under Linux, now
there is an arsenal of guides. (Thanks to communities like counter-server,
hostinghacks, ev1servers etc.)

Everyone can, forget the elistist way that many people present themselfs
as game guru's, usually they're only that inside of their head.

I know it isn't a smart move to say this on a list filled with gamingserver
companies but I am ready for your point of view and might learn something of
it :)

I'll give you my point... I am in Portugal, where lots of GSP's
cartelized the market. They created a Association of GSP's, where they
defined how the market would be explored. Any new GSP coming in, joined
or was got gunned down in a war of prices. I worked for one of those
cartelized GSP's. We got fed up with it, and with the support of a ISP
wich gave us machines and 100Mbit connection, me and some other people
founded our small turf, providing some of the finest public servers for
Portugal and Spain and free bookable servers for the clans to practice
and have wars. Currently we lack only of peering with one national ISP,
all the other ISP's have the option of having GIGA Ethernet peering with
us, those who did it, have pings of 15/20, all the others around 25/30
(including a huge part of spain). They wanna cartelize to rip people
off, the players answer was simple, PAYBACK TIME :) There's still market
for them, as it will always be, but the funny thing, is that two of
those big GSP's are already negotiating with us to help us out with more
servers and join our small community and initiatives. Currently we
supplying ladders, hot downloads, free public servers, bookable servers
and a huge battalion of community admins to keep the servers clean. Then
you have big ISP's changing completly their routing policy in order to
save some bucks... a funny thing that happened, was one ISP who refused
peering and demanded nearly 3000Mbit for E1 peering with us. They
continued with their policies, wich I don't blame, untill after some
time they had nearly 45Mbit at peak hours going through international
routes (wich gave higher ping rates), and a huge bill them to pay to
their long range carrier... They already scheduled a meeting with our
provider to negotiate peering, hopefully it will be ok soon, if that
happens, we will be covering the full country at low latencies. We're
also IPv6 operational and have some Quake/Quake2 IPv6 servers online. If
someone has a SIXXS (http://www.sixxs.org) account they can play with us
:). Trust me, when you get lots of players supporting your cause, u can
bring down some giants !

Our rule: 'Use this service as priviledge and not as a right!'

Don't take me for a big fat company who is pimping people out, I am a
part of those who are trying to provide a clean gaming experience at 0
cost.

Personally, I hate when companies try to cartelize the market in order
to pimp people out, but they are needed, since small initiatives like
ours won't ever be able to cover the whole thing.
