Thats not what I said. I said in some cases the Linux ABI in FreeBSD will run Linux apps faster than Linux will run the same app. My statement was not so general. I did some searching but all I could find were some fan boy statements, atm I don't have the time to keep searching. I used to have some bookmarks about this stuff as it was an interesting read but they seem to be lost. The game server I mentioned was quake2, but alas I cannot find that article any more either.

No, what you said was "very fast drive" which someone may take as "my 5400 rpm drive won't cut it" which it easily will. It should be said I am a huge SCSI advocate, but from a performance perspective for hlds it doesn't matter.
Other reasons to use a SAN (or mounted log drive) include massive statistical analysis without lag.
I notice you didnt agree that map changes on one server introduce lag on another server. Way to point out what's wrong without pointing out what's right.
Disk access isn't going to lag a server like you to imply. Remember we're talking about hlds here. The server runs primarily out of memory and only loads the next map from disk (at least that whats been discussed on this list many times). The only lag as a result would be slightly higher changelevel times. Statistical analysis is more likely a CPU resource issue than disk (like psychostats). And if you've got many other services running then thats OT to this thread.
I apologize for being a bit jerkish. I have just talked to some server admins that force their customers to disable logging off ALL plugins on their server to or get their server shut down. It's just not the case. HLDS and no amount of plugins (that I know of) w/ logging functions will lag a hard drive.
